GREENSBORO — The Lady Greyhounds beat another big school Thursday in the holiday tournament at Northwest Guilford.

North Surry’s basketball team beat Chapel Hill 52-44 with a steady increase in points. The Hounds outscored Chapel Hill by three in the first, three in the second and two more for the second half to win by eight.

“We talked about maturing as a team at the beginning of the season, and I think that is the biggest thing we gained the last two days,” said Coach Shane Slate.

“Today was a good win for us because we were able to overcome turnovers and answer the runs Chapel Hill made at us in the second half,” the coach said. “We had different people step up and make plays to keep them at bay.”

The Hounds (9-0) played for the second game without point guard Morgan Midkiff, out with an illness.

Forward Morgan Bunker led the team in assists and steals for the second-straight day, getting four each to go with four points.

“I feel like we showed signs of becoming a solid half-court defensive team and that helped us offset the pressure on our offense,” said Slate. “We also did an outstanding job rebounding again tonight, we held a 37-to-15 edge.”

Kristina Rumplasch led the way with 20 points and 12 boards, nearly as many as the whole Chapel Hill team. Malaya Johnson just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Others scoring were Bailey Culler nine, Taylor Hill six, Erin March two and Maddison Hawks two.

Chapel Hill, which lost for the first time in 11 games this season, had no players in double figures, spreading the points around to eight different players.
