WINSTON-SALEM — The Lady Greyhounds built a big first-half lead, then had to hold on in a close finish for a 40-36 win over Winston-Salem Prep.

North Surry jumped out to a 19-2 lead after the first quarter. Forward Kristina Rumplasch nailed three long-range jumpers to jump-start the offense.

By halftime, the Hounds led 27-13.

Still, the Lady Phoenix kept scrapping and edged closer to 34-23 by the end of the third quarter.

The Phoenix cut the lead all the way to one point in the final two minutes, but North Surry hit some critical foul shots to secure the win.

It turned into a battle at the end, said assistant coach Drew Belton. The Hounds made 13-18 foul shots for the game (72 percent).

Rumplasch finished with a game-high 14 points, and Malaya Johnson had 13 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots.

Erin March added nine points, and Maddison and Morgan Hawks had two each.

For Prep, Kayla Robinson scored 11, Kristian Saunders nine and Kyala Searcy eight.

North Surry hosts Bishop on Friday, while Prep plays at Surry Central today.
