PILOT MOUNTAIN —The Surry Runnin’ Patriot girls defeated Sheets Memorial Eagle at home winning the second match against them on Tuesday.
The score ended with Patriots on top 44-27.
The Pats’ Head Coach Todd Hill said the Runnin’ Patriots fought for a good lead early and the first quarter ended Patriots 15-8.
Hill said, “We came out with good defense which produced good offense.” He added, the team established a good tempo right from the start.
During the second quarter, the Pats built on the lead and went into the half with a score of 27-15, Hill said.
The coach said the team showed more of the same good defense and good intensity in the second quarter and worked hard to force turnovers. The Surry Patriots had a game total of 18 steals, Hill said.
During the second half, the Patriots maintained their lead and Hill said everyone contributed to the team effort.
The Patriots coach said he was glad to see the team win on the boards against the Eagles because in the last basketball game, the Eagles out-rebounded the Patriots, he said.
“They beat us on the boards in Lexington, but at home we beat them by five on the boards.”
Hill said the Surry Runnin’ Pats have “controlled the boards” (led in rebounds) in all but two games, those being against Cabarrus and Sheets. This is significant, Hill said, because physically the Surry Runnin’ Patriots team “is not that big.”
The Patriots are 14-3 overall and will play American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro at 5:30 p.m. today.
Some game stats for the Runnin’ Patriot Girls against the Eagles included: Camille Fishel, eight rebounds; Kelsey Cave, six rebounds; Sydney Bedsaul, five rebounds; and Jessica Boyd, four rebounds.
Hill said high scorers for the Runnin’ Patriots included: Jessica Boyd, 22 points; Sydney Bedsaul, 8; and Ashley Marshall, 6.
