To the Editor,

The old adage “actions speak louder than words” is certainly applicable in the current race for Register of Deeds in Surry County. All of us have seen the campaign signs by Todd Harris stating that he is a “Republican” and a “conservative” as he attempts to unseat Carolyn Comer.

When Mr. Harris was a Mount Airy City Commissioner, he voted on multiple occasions to forcibly annex areas into the City limits. Thankfully (and rightfully), the Republican led legislature in Raleigh has now ended forced annexation in North Carolina. The rights of property owners as well as freedom from the heavy-hand of government are basic tenets of true Republicans.

I am a Republican and a conservative – but I am not a fool. Mr. Harris’s attempt to ride in on the hard work and coattails of true conservatives is merely opportunistic and self-serving. His desire to be in charge of the most important records in our county – including the records on our property for which he has shown such contempt, is unacceptable.

I, along with many other Republicans I know, will be casting my vote on November 6 for Carolyn Comer.

Monty K. Venable

Mount Airy

It doesn't matter which party the Register of Deeds belongs to or for how long, the point is "Don't fix it if it 'aint broke." There are a lot of opportunities to cast our vote to make a change that will likely be an improvement, but this is not one of those. I support Ms. Comer until there are facts to support the notion that she is not doing a reasonable job in her position.

I totally agree with the editorial. The functions Carolyn Comer has performed are impressive. She, along with her staff have created “The Surry County Resister of Deeds” as one of the finest (if not the finest) in the state of North Carolina. Accurate records have been generated, along with delivering respectable and courteous service by Carolyn and her staff, by assisting with (but not limited) the access of records. Her kindness and professionalism are unmatched by her predecessors. The position of The Resister of Deeds should not be considered insignificant, but one that is an important part of the strength of our county. Why replace someone with her expertise as well as the respect of all that know her, or have required her assistance? With someone with NO EXPERIANCE Vote for Carolyn Comer!

I don’t which Monte Venable it is. I imagine it’s the same one that is and has been well respected in this community for years. Your argument Mr. Grizzly is the very argument that weakens the Republican Party. When we argue to elect an obviously inferior republican candidate over someone who the entire county knows does a fine job, is as conservative if not more so than most of our own, is a Christian, and has served the county with distinction for many years; we shoot ourselves in the foot. You’re advocating doing the exact same thing we’ve cursed the Democrats for doing for years. That make us hypocrites and the public knows it. It wouldn’t surprise me to see this republican candidate (Mr. Harris) be the drag on our other local republicans that cost some of them their positions. I applaud Mr. Venable for having the courage to tell the truth. And I’d use caution talking about “the same old Democrat cronyism that has gone on at the local level for so many years.” I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but our Republican brothers have controlled the board of county commissioners for many, many years; not the Democrats.

The Register of Deeds office should not really be politcal. It should be determined by who is best suited and most capable of maintaining and protecting the public records. I'm a Republican, but Ms. Comer and her staff have decades of experience. For me, Ms. Comer is the obvious choice.

When a Candidate has been there as long as she has, it's time for a fresh change. Give Mr. Harris a swing at it. You just might lean to the other side of the fence for a change. I liked Kool-Aid as a kid, but I have out grown it now.How many unnecessary employees fill that office? Big County Government is not good.Make it lean and mean. It's not only your Tax Dollars, it's our Tax Dollars funding this office.

How willing you are CONSERVATIVE2YOU to vote against your own best interest just because one person is a democrat and the other a republican. Educate yourself. Carolyn Comer has trimmed her staff by at least 4 people from what it was when Bud Cameron was Register. She uses fewer tax dollars to run her office now than were used 8 years ago. And yet you advocate making a change. Why not just say what's on your mind. You want a republican even if it's not in your or the public's best interest. I don't care what her politics are. If a person does a good job, saves tax dollars and especially if she handles her duties without causing the kind of ruckus her opponent was known for while he was one of our city commissioners ....... then I'm voting for her, and anyone who's actually thinking and not just playing politics will do the same.

Is this the same Monte Veneable who wrote a letter to the editor condemning public prayer before a Mt. Airy Board of Commissioners meeting some years ago? Real Republicans don't do that. Republicans don't support what Democrats stand for whether it be supporting Barack Obama in the white house, the Democrat party platform in the state of North Carolina which calls for a repeal of the marrriage amendment or calling for a contiunation of the same old Democrat cronyism that has gone on at the local level for so may years. Republican, no... more likely RINO!
