On Saturday October 23 James Callis “Jimmy” Hiatt was inducted into the Surry County Sports Hall of Fame. He was one of Surry County's best known athletes in the first half of the 20th century, excelling in both baseball and basketball. In later years he was perhaps better known as a coach, teacher, and principal at Franklin School. I knew him as my grandfather.
Grandpa left us way too early in 1977, when I was only 9 years old. I enjoyed only a few short years with him, but even at a young age I knew my grandpa was respected and loved by many. I will always remember him playing with his grandchildren in the floor, frequently catching us in his “bear traps.” I also remember helping him decorate his house for Christmas each year, and the many wonderful times the family spent together at his home. Family was truly a priority in his life. Grandpa set a tremendous example for his family. Each of his children and grandchildren carry with us to this day the principles and values he taught us, teachings we are now attempting to pass on to a new generation.
So, with a great deal of pride and humility I say congratulations Grandpa, you deserve this honor, but you made it to the Grandpa Hall of Fame a long time ago.
Jim Hiatt
