Human error results in switch in mayoral election win, Cochran wins seat

Results are in from the Surry County Board of Elections on today’s political races.

According to the Surry County Board of Elections official, a computer issue caused the results to be transmitted manually and a human error caused the counts to be added to the wrong candidate.

As a result, Deborah Cochran unofficially won the seat with 1,018 votes, to Teresa Lewis' 897 votes.

In the Mount Airy commissioner races involving candidates Jon Cawley and Steve Yokeley, neither candidate is opposed.

In the Dobson mayoral race, incumbent Ricky K. Draughn has received 132 votes, while challenger Kenneth Earnest has 128 votes, with 2 of two precincts reporting. Unofficially, Draughn has won the seat, but with only 1.52 percent more votes.

In the Dobson race for two commissioners seats, of which the top two vote-getters will win, Wayne Atkins has 140 votes, Ron Atkins has 97 votes, Kermit Draughn has 79 votes, John D. Lawson has 109 votes, Ted Ring has 28 votes and Jonathan Snow has 48 votes, with 2 of two precincts reporting. Unofficially, the winners are Wayne Atkins and John Lawson.

In Pilot Mountain races, incumbents Carolyn Boyles and Andrew French were not opposed for their seats.
