While Republicans across the nation are gearing up for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., starting Monday, as far local representative go, none from the Republican party in Surry County will be in attendance.
Dan Kiger, chairman of the Surry County Republican Party, said local names were submitted to the district, but no representatives from Surry County were chosen to attend the convention as delegates.
He said he has not heard of any local residents that will be in attending on their own.
“Individuals can go if they can get a ticket, but none were elected from Surry to attend,” said Kiger.
He said each district in North Carolina has elected the delegates who will attend.
“There are only so many allotted for each state, we just didn’t have enough votes to get someone to go from here,” said Kiger.
In all, there will be 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternate delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories in attendance for the 40th annual convention.
