A Mount Airy man was in a Winston-Salem hospital Monday with multiple stab wounds suffered during a reported home invasion, and his alleged assailants were still at large.
Bruce Campbell, 47, of Brooklen Avenue in the Highland Park community off U.S. 601, was assaulted during a robbery reported to city police about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
“Allegedly, three people entered (the home), and they robbed him and stole an undisclosed amount of currency and some medication,” said Detective P.M. Barker of the Mount Airy Police Department, who is investigating the crime.
“Then before they left, they used some type of knife and stabbed him through the abdomen,” the detective added. “He had multiple puncture wounds to the stomach area.”
Campbell initially was transported to Northern Hospital of Surry County, then transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A hospital spokesperson said Monday afternoon that Campbell was listed as a patient, but did not release information about his condition.
Meanwhile, no arrests had been made in the case as of Monday afternoon. “It’s still under investigation,” Barker said.
Campbell described the three men who forcibly entered his residence as two black males and one white male. “He did not know them,” the detective added, and the victim was the only occupant there at the time of the robbery.
Barker said he had spoken only briefly with the injured man while he was at the local hospital Sunday night, and hoped to be able to shed more light on the incident after a follow-up interview with Campbell.
The alleged assailants are facing charges of first-degree burglary; robbery with a dangerous weapon; and assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.
