In her second local appearance since returning from a summer singing tour of Europe, international jazz singer Melva Houston will present, Coming Home: An Evening of Jazz and Blues, this Sunday at Round Peak Vineyard.

Houston calls Mount Airy home even though she is originally from Memphis, Tenn. She and her husband, Thaxton, have lived in Mount Airy for more than 30 years.

Houston has recently returned from her 14th and final tour of Europe.

“Touring Europe has been exciting and fun. However, I am now 63 years old and I’m tired,” said Houston. “I prefer singing locally to a familiar audience. I’ve been blessed through the years with being able to make a lot of great friends who enjoy hearing me sing. They are my biggest fans.”

Mark Gillespie, the show’s producer, said he admires Houston for more than just her talent.

“She’s always giving back to the community in some way. If there is someone in need or a community program in need of volunteers, she is there ready to lend a helping hand. Not only is she a great friend and a great performer, she is also a great person.”

Aside from its award-winning wines and beer, Round Peak Vineyard is surrounded by views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“I have not performed at Round Peak Vineyard before and I am very excited about it,” said Houston. “The back porch makes a perfect stage for me and the band.”

The concert is scheduled for Sunday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. just after the Autumn Leaves Festival closes down.

“What a great way to bring closure to the festival events. There will be great wine, beer, food and entertainment,” said Gillespie.

Glazed and Infused Catering will be selling food featuring its tongue slappin’ sauce. All beverages and food must be purchased on site. No outside food or alcohol is permitted.

“Join us as we watch a legendary blues and jazz performer delivering a song like no one else can,” said Gillespie.

Tickets are on sale now on a limited basis, first-come first-served. Admission is $15. Those who want to attend are encouraged to buy tickets in advance by calling Mark Gillespie at 789-2035 or by emailing him at jmarkgillespie@aol.com.

“Bring your chair or blanket and sit back to watch one of the best entertainers around. You won’t be disappointed,” said Gillespie.

The rain date is scheduled for Oct. 21.
