Mount Airy Bears swim for 180 points to beat Cardinals

The Mount Airy High School swim team outpaced the Cardinals 180-114 in the second swim meet of the season held at the Reeves Community Center on Monday, and both teams accumulated automatic and consideration times for regionals.

The swim meet total score breakdown was as follows: Mount Airy boys won 89-35 ; and Mount Airy girls won 91-79.

Though the East Surry Cardinals lost the match, Coach Leah Tunstall said the meet went “OK for us.” She said overall she was pleased with performances but called it “touched out.” Tunstall said this means the races are really close and said there was a lot of swings back and forth despite the point difference on paper.

In the girls 200 yard medley relay, both teams finished with low enough times to qualify for the regionals. They had to swim a time under 2:13.99 to make automatic consideration in the medley.

Both (A) team girls’ relay teams made automatic times in just their second meet of the season.

The ESHS girls team (A) took the event and finished with a time of 2:07.41 The team members were: Kelsey Tunstall, Kayla Simmons, Katherine Martin and Avery Tilley.

The MAHS girls team (A) finished just .3 seconds behind the Cardinals and finished with a time of 2:07.44. The team members were: Emma Harrison, Sydney Peavey, Ivy Marion and Lizzie Pell.

MAHS’s Emma Harrison finished first and Avery Tilley placed second in the girls 200 yard freestyle. They each finished with times good enough to receive automatic consideration for the regionals. A time of 2:27.99 is needed to automatically qualify for the regionals. Emma Slater finished nearly 13 seconds under that time.

In the girls 200 individual medley, ESHS Katherine Martin finished first and received an automatic regional qualifying time of 2:29:95. MAHS Ivy Martin finished first and Erika Metscher second, and both received regional consideration times.

Five girls received consideration times during the swim meet’s girls 50 yard freestyle. They were: MAHS Catherine Scott, first place, ESHS Mikayla Elliot, second place; MAHS Lizzie Pell, third place; MAHS Micaela Tumbarello, fourth place; and ESHS Katelyn Custer placed fifth. All made consideration time scores.

In the girls 100 yard butterfly event, ESHS’s Kelsey Tunstall placed first and swam a 1:07.85 and gathered an automatic consideration time for the regionals. MAHS’s Katherine Scott got second place and received a consideration time as did ESHS’s Kayla Simmons who finished third.

In the 100 yard girl’s butterfly event high scorers were: ESHS Kelsey Tunstall had a 1:07.85 time finish that gave her automatic regional time and first place; MAHS Catherine Scott was second and earned a consideration time; and ESHS Kayla Simmons finished third and earned a consideration time.

In the girls 100 yard freestyle: ESHS Katherine Martin won first place and earned an automatic consideration for regionals with a time of 1:01.97. Sydney Peavy received second place and earned a regional consideration time, Ivy Marion placed third and earned a consideration time, and Micaela Tumbarello took fourth and earned a consideration time, also.

In the girls 500 yard freestyle: ESHS Tunstall took first and scored a time of 6:04.51 qualifying as an automatic contender swimmer in regionals. MAHS Lizzie Pell placed second.

In the girls 200 yard freestyle relay, the Mount Airy A team got an automatic qualifying regional time of 1:56.1. The team members are Catherine Scott, Ivy Marion, Sydney Peavy and Emma Harrison.

The ESHS A team made a regional consideration time of 2:03.87 and the team members are Kayla Simmons, Mikayla Elliot, Katelyn Custer and Avery Tilley.

In the girls 100 yard backstroke, MAHS’s Emma Harrison took first and got an automatic regional qualifying time of 1:08.38 ESHS Mikayla Elliot made a consideration time of 1:22.14.

In the girls 100 yard breaststroke, MAHS Sydney Peavy took first place and earned an automatic regional time of 1:19.58 and so did ESHS Avery Tilley, who took second place with a time of 1:20.38. ESHS Kayla Simmons and MAHS Erika Metscher both had consideration times.

In the girls 100 yard breaststoke, MAHS Marisa Petri placed first with 1:38.54.

In the girls 400 yard freestyle relay, the East Surry A team had a consideration time and finished first with a time of 4:38.34.

In the boys 200 medley, the Mount Airy A team of Jack McClusky William Judd, Andrew Jones and Jacob Puckett got first and made a consideration time.

In the boys 200 yard freestyle, MAHS Blake Hensley finished first at 2:34.27 and ESHS Ethan Atkins finished at 2:49.03.

In the boys 200 yard IM, ESHS Christopher Holshouser finished first and had a consideration time of 2:32.52. MAHS Andrew Jones finished second and had a consideration time of 2:48.85.

In the boys 50 yard freestyle, MAHS Mason Epperson finished first, MAHS John Dinkins second and ESHS Caleb Mann third.

In the boys 100 yard freestyle, Jacob Puckett took first, William Judd took second and Caleb Mann placed third.

In the boys 200 yard freestyle relay, the MAHS boys A team finished first with a consideration time of 1:49.95.

In the boys 100 yard backstroke, Jack McClusky scored first and Michael Hazel second.

In the boys 100 yard breaststroke, ESHS Christopher Holshouser finished first with a consideration time of 1:17.31 and MAHS Hayden Culler finished second.

In the boys 400 yard freestyle relay, the MAHS A team finished first with a consideration time of 4:55.62.
