North Surry quarterback Austin Handy is recognized on Senior Night with his parents and fellow seniors. Coach Danny Lyons said Handy had his best game of the season.
The North Surry Greyhounds blazed a dominating victory 38-14 last night over Surry Central.
The Greyhounds took the win by connecting with offensive weapons Blaze Acord, D.J. Boyles, Dakota Goss, Alex Edwards and Shawn DeHart. Austin Handy threw for 107 yards and the Greyhounds defensive line pounded away at the Eagles all night. In addition, the Greyhounds offensive line blocked well all night and protected the quarterback who rushed in for a touchdown.
The offense registered a whopping 310 yards for the game and Acord blazed for 109 of them. Handy had recorded 107 offensive yards, Boyles had 29, Goss had 33 and DeHart had 23.
Surry Central repeatedly made forced errors, and Jared Dimmette was ejected from the game for unnecessary roughness.
Surry Central did not score a touchdown until the third quarter making the total 31-7.
North Surry received the ball first. QB Austin Handy hit fullback Shawn DeHart in the flat for a 34-yard gain on the first play. A few plays later, Blaze Acord rushed from eight yards out.
Surry Central attempted a FG, but it was blocked by NS George Rumplasch around the 25 yard line. Josh Cox picked it up and ran it in for a score. The Greyhounds took the lead 14-0.
During the opening of the second quarter, Josh Cox caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Austin Handy, midway through the quarter. A great throw by Handy was made with good coverage by the defense, and he dropped the ball in a tight window between two defenders connecting a touchdown.
Surry Central’s offense had scored 19 plays for 18 yards at the half still but could not put up the points against a heavy duty blocking Greyhound defensive line.
In the third quarter Handy threw a 14-yard pass to Sidney Simpson #47 enough for Carlos Flores to boot in a 34-yard field goal for the Eagles.
Surry Central scored off a deep pass in the third quarter, but connected only on two passes all night for scores.
Blaze Acord run in a dancing and hard-hitting style yet again in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard run. He followed his blockers and scored to make it 38-14.
Acord blazed for 15 yards on 28 carries and was 2-8 passing for 127 yards and pulled in two touchdowns.
North Surry Coach Danny Lyons, “I was really proud of our defense. That’s an offense that’s hard to prepare for.
“They caused four turnovers tonight. They gave us a short field most of the night. They’ve been the heart and soul of the team all year.”
The Greyhounds recorded 7-8 passing yards for Handy and 104 yards. “That makes our offense even more dangerous,” he said.
“I am really proud of Austin. He’s a senior who’s gotten better as the year’s gone along,” said Lyons.
Finally, Blaze Acord rushed 20 times for 118 yards and two TDs. Shawn DeHart had six rushes for 30 yards and two touchdowns. He also totaled two catches for 42 yards.
Brady Kraft had two catches for 19 yards and Josh Cox got in one. Acord got in one catch for 10 yards. Dakota Goss rushed six times for 36 yards and senior D.J. Boyles had three rushes for 29 yards. Handy scrambled for 18 yards and Corbin Bullins had two rushes for 17 yards.
We are “really proud of the way we played coming off the first loss of the season. The guys really responded. We were physical again, and we were ready to play from the opening kickoff.”
“On offense and special teams a lot of good things were happening tonight,” said Lyons.
North Surry went 7-1 this week and will host East Surry (5-4) next week.
