Nunez headed to championship match; others still competing in 1A state wrestling

GREENSBORO — The state wrestling championship continued Friday afternoon with the opening round for the 1A competitors at the Greensboro Coliseum.

At 106 pounds, East Surry’s Eddie Nunez beat South Stanly’s Cody Shields to advance to the semifinals and then faced Simon Connolly, North Rowan, who defeated Jose Aguilar, North Wilkes. Nunez defeated Connolly 5-0 to advance to the championship match against Zack Orr, Robbinsville. That match will be held today.

At 113, East Surry’s Timmy Norman was pinned in :59 by James Dagget, Chatham Central. Norman will compete in the consolation bracket today for a chance at third place. In the first round of consolation, he will face Josh Thomas, Dixon.

At 126, Bishop McGuinness’ Alexander Preudhomme faced Deonte Whitfield, Southwest Onslow, and won. He then defeated Jake St. Germain, West Wilkes, to advance to the championship round today. He will face Nick Quillen, Rosewood.

At 138, Mount Airy’s Shay Wilson lost to Henry Seiler, N.C. School of Science and Math, 7-2. Today, he will face Lance Armenta, Southwest Onslow, in the first round of the consolation bracket for a chance to take on Nicholas Trego, Bishop McGuinness, who lost to Kevin Anderson, Lejeune. The winner of the consolation play will take third in the state.

At 145, East Surry’s Jimmy Speer fell to Chad Hoff, Pamlico County, 8-1, while Mount Airy’s Triston Mabry lost to Jacob Farmer, Southwest Onslow, by pin in 1:19. Speer and Mabry will face each other in the first round of consolation today. The winner of that match will face Brandon Lemmon, North Rowan, for a chance to move up toward the third place match.

At 160, South Stokes’ T.J. Whaley fell to Zach Winegardner, Southwest Onslow, 10-0. He will face Tyrone McKoy, South Robeson, in consolation.

At 170, Bishop’s Frank LaDew lost to Jorge Martinez, Ayden-Grifton, 8-5. He will wrestle Matthew Chilton, East Carteret, in consolation.

At 195, Mount Airy’s Zaqwan Dobson was pinned in 2:33 by Tyler Hudson, Dixon. He will now face Curtis Jones, Ayden-Grifton, in consolation.

Also at 195, East Surry’s Cody Gaskill defeated Humberton Mendoza, Pamlico County, 4-1. Today, Gaskill will face Spencer McKoy, Robbinsville, for a chance to move to the championship match.

At 220, Mount Airy’s Mason Timmerman lost to Todd Cogar, East Carteret, by forfeit. He could wrestle Chris Alex Lopez, Ayden-Grifton, in consolation today.
