PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Pilot Press AAU team has won another tournament, traveling into Virginia to take first in the 19th annual Patrick County AAU Invitational a week ago.
The Press, made up of local third-graders, competed against teams of fourth-graders and still went 4-0 for first place.
In the first game, Pilot defeated Surry Thunder 27-16. In the second game, the Press defeated a Galax team 34-12. The third game was a 29-8 win over the local Patrick County team.
In the finals, the Press were against the Thunder again. Pilot won the tournament with a 33-18 score. That improved the team’s season record to 18-8.
The team previously won a tournament here Jan. 22-23. The Press won all three matches in the Pilot Mountain Challenge by an average score of 44-7.
In the first game, the Press beat Surry Thunder 44-6. In the second, it was Pilot over the North Stokes Dragons 41-6. Then the Dragons were back in the finals, and the Press won 46-8.
Pilot’s head coach is Jay Boaz with assistant coach Rodney Jessup. The team includes Nick Badgett, Folger Boaz, Jefferson Boaz, Kyler Jessup, Nolan McMillen, Dillon Mosley, Quincey Smith and Jake Tweet.
