- A registered sex offender has been arrested for allegedly being on the premises of Reeves Community Center in violation of a city ordinance, according to the Mount Airy Police Department.
Mark Stephen Patterson, 51, of 798 White Buffalo Road, was taken into custody Tuesday by an officer with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and returned to the city police station to be served with a warrant on the violation, arrest records show. Patterson was held in the county jail under a $25,000 secured bond on the offense listed as a felony.
He allegedly was unlawfully on the premises of Reeves Community Center last week. An ordinance approved by the city commissioners in 2008 bans registered sex offenders from city parks and other recreational facilities.
Patterson is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on July 16.
- Police were told Monday that a vehicle had been damaged while parked at Chili’s Restaurant on Rockford Street. Someone used a permanent marker to write on a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer owned by Chili’s employee Stephanie Marie Simpson of Simpson Road, causing damage to the paint estimated at $100. The case remains open for further investigation.
- Also Monday, a break-in and larceny was reported at the Hamburg Street residence of Junior Albert Key. After kicking in a door to gain entry, someone stole a stereo, a Makita Sawzall, a box containing various tools, a home telephone and a cell phone, items valued at more than $700 altogether. The case remains open for further investigation.
- Sherry Wiles Norman, 39, of 191 Greenhouse Trail in Lowgap, was arrested on a larceny charge Sunday at Zip Foods on North Andy Griffith Parkway after allegedly trying to steal cigarettes valued at $15 from the convenience store. Norman also was served with warrants on additional charges that had been filed on June 4, including resisting a public officer, misdemeanor larceny and second-degree trespassing. She was confined in the Surry County Jail under secured bonds of $2,500 and $500 and is scheduled to appear in District Court on July 15.
- A break-in of a locked vehicle occurred Sunday in the parking lot of Mayberry Mall. Rebecca Ann Frye of Ararat told police that a JVC car CD player was stolen from her 1988 Ford Festiva. The case remains open for further investigation.
