• A Westfield woman is facing a series of charges in connection with two separate incidents Sunday, according to Mount Airy Police Department reports. In the first, Jill McHone Rogers, 33, of 5062 Highway 89-West, is accused of possession of a toxic substance, inhaling toxic vapors and shoplifting/concealment at Walgreens on U.S. 601. Rogers was suspected of inhaling air duster in the ladies restroom of the store, and subsequently was found with an empty can of 3M dust remover. The woman, who is facing additional violations of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, admitted that she did not pay for the dust remover that was taken from Walgreens, police records state.

In the second incident later Sunday, Rogers allegedly struck a utility pole on Granite Road while driving a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup and left the scene. She later was located by a Surry County deputy on N.C. 103. Rogers was cited and released in that case, after earlier being released under a $500 unsecured bond in the matter involving toxic vapors. She is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Jan. 16.

• Guillermo Hernandez, 16, of 507 Bear Creek Church Road, Dobson, was cited for alleged concealment of merchandise Sunday at Walmart, involving earrings. A Jan. 27 District Court date was set for Hernandez.

• A case of obtaining money by false pretenses was reported Friday night in which counterfeit checks were passed at a local supermarket. Two unknown suspects entered Food Lion on West Lebanon Street and received an undisclosed sum of cash for two checks they presented which subsequently were determined to be bogus. No description was given for the pair.

• Austin Lee Phillips, 20, of 612 Pipers Gap Road, was cited for larceny Friday after allegedly stealing an auxiliary cable valued at $15 from Walmart. Phillips was located by the license number of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup he was operating. His District Court appearance is set for Jan. 22.

• Charles Michael Hill, 18, of 916 Dodson Mill Road, Pilot Mountain, was cited for larceny on Dec. 3 after allegedly leaving Walmart without paying for merchandise valued at $36, including a coat and pair of scissors. Hill is scheduled to be in District Court on Jan. 8.

• Justin Shane Atkins, 22, of 135 W. Lebanon St., No. 4, is facing multiple felony charges including common-law robbery and first-degree burglary, along with misdemeanor assault on a female, which were filed on Nov. 30. Police records indicate that the charges involved the theft of $5. Atkins was held in the Surry County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond.

About five hours earlier the same day, police had encountered Atkins during a domestic disturbance and found that he was wanted regarding an assault the day before. He is facing offenses of assault, inflicting serious injury, and breaking and entering in that incident. At the time he was encountered, the man also had a metallic smoking pipe containing the odor of marijuana and was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Atkins was jailed under a $5,000 secured bond on that occasion and is facing Jan. 8 and Jan. 28 appearances in Surry District Court on the various offenses.
