A rash of vehicular break-ins in the northern part of Mount Airy has prompted warnings to local residents from city police.

At least 18 separate cases were reported Thursday, keeping officers busy.

“We started taking reports this morning,” Capt. Alan Freeman said late Thursday afternoon, “and we’re still taking reports.”

The incidents were concentrated in the area of Jackson Road and Oaklawn Road. Freeman feared the number could expand later Thursday with additional residents discovering break-ins.

The police captain said the most immediate concern is for citizens to take steps to protect their property. “I just want people not to leave any valuables in their cars,” he said.

Freeman mentioned that an expensive camera and tennis equipment were among some of the more costly items reported stolen, but did not have a collective value for property taken. “Honest to gosh, I can’t even give you a price,” Freeman said, referring to the magnitude of the crimes.

Another step citizens are encouraged to take is being more attentive and contacting the Mount Airy Police Department if they observe any suspicious activity, individuals or vehicles in their areas.

A similar appeal by police in late January, in response to a rash of residential break-ins in the southern end of Mount Airy, led to the arrest of a man on multiple charges. That occurred after a resident noticed a suspicious person walking in the Worth Street section and notified authorities.
