WINSTON-SALEM — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls lost the Western Regional Championship game to Cabarrus on Saturday after advancing through the semi-final regionals and defeating the Asheville Trailblazers.

Cabarrus took the Western Regional title from the Surry Runnin’ Patriots by a score of 18-7.

The Pats were beaten by Cabarrus twice during the regular 2012-13 season and could not muster enough offensively in the championship game to ever pull ahead of the Stallions.

Surry Runnin’ Patriot Coach Todd Hill said his team held back offensively when Cabarrus Stallions adopted a zone-defense. “We just stood there and stared at them,” said Hill.

The Patriots did not score any points against Cabarrus in the first quarter and only scored two in the second. The score going into half-time was Cabarrus on top 9-2. During the game’s third quarter, the Pats were held pointless again and the quarter ended with Cabarrus up 12-2.

Hill said the girls did open up offensively in the last six minutes of the game and scored five in the fourth quarter. However, Cabarrus beat the Pats out by one point in the fourth and never allowed the Patriots to score higher than them during the entire game.

Patriots beat Trailblazers, 58-45

Of the semi-finals match-up against the Asheville Trailblazers, Head Coach Todd Hill said, “The Patriot team stayed patient to pull out the win. The depth on the bench gave us a lot of good minutes.”

He said the Pats played balanced on both offense and defense and spread out the scoring against the Trailblazers.

Surry Runnin’ Patriots Camille Fishel and Jessica Boyd shined by scoring a double-double in the semi-final round, said Hill.

Patriot Boyd scored 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Joye Harrison had 13 points, six assists and eight steals. Fishel scored 10 points and registered 10 rebounds. Sydney Bedsaul scored nine, Kaylee Paris eight, and Kelsey Cave scored two. Cave also had nine rebounds.

The Pats are now the number two seed in the West conference and will play Durham, the number one seed of the East Conference, at the state final championships during the first bracket match-up next weekend. That game will be held at Greensboro College and will be at 1:45 p.m.

The number-one seeded Cabarrus will play the North Wake basketball team from the East conference. The winners of those state semi-final games will play for the state championship on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
