DOBSON — Surry Community College defeated Guilford Tech before falling to Catawba Valley in a Region X volleyball tri-match on Tuesday.

The Lady Knights swept past the Titans in the first contest 3-0.

Surry took an 18-13 lead in the opening set behind the serving of former Greyhound Nicole Rumplasch before holding off Guilford Tech, 25-15.

In the second set, the Lady Knights raced to an early 8-1 lead before taking a 2-0 lead in the match at 25-11. SCC jumped out early again in the third set, leading 12-1 before capturing the match over the Titans 25-7.

Offensively, the Lady Knights were led by Brooke Johnson (North Surry grad) with eight kills while Alexis Allen (Mount Airy) added six kills. Jenna Clement (Mount Airy) led Surry with 31 assists to go along with four service aces while Sara Parker (North Surry) added four aces.

Defensively, Alysha Shelton (Surry Central) notched 21 digs while Parker added 17 digs. Allen recorded four blocks while Rumplasch added two blocks.

After Catawba Valley swept Guilford Tech in three sets (25-5, 25-7, 25-14), the Buccaneers faced Surry in the final match of the day.

Catawba Valley raced out to a 15-1 lead in the opening set and finished the Knights 25-7. In the second set, Surry pulled within 23-22, before the Buccaneers rallied for the final two points 25-22.

In the third set, the Lady Knights fought back from a 23-17 deficit to pull within one a point at 23-22. However, Catawba Valley captured the final two points and the match 25-22.

Parker led Surry with eight kills while also adding 16 digs. Rumplasch notched five kills and added a team high eight blocks. Clement dished out 14 assists while adding a service ace. Shelton led the Surry defense with 25 digs while contributing a service ace.

Surry (9-2, 3-2 Region X) returns to action today in a tri-match hosted by Pitt Community College. The Lady Knights face the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. then face Spartanburg-Methodist College at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, Surry will play in another tri-match at Lenoir Community College. The Lady Knights face the Lancers at 10 a.m. before facing Louisburg Junior College at noon.
