DOBSON — The Surry County School System has begun preparations for the 2009-10 school year and is looking to begin registration for kindergarten and prekindergarten.

All children who will be 5-years-old on or before Aug. 31 are eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall and those who turn 4-years-old on or before Aug. 31 are eligible to enter prekindergarten. All elementary schools in the county are accepting preregistrations for kindergarten and prekindergarten classes and ask that parents contact the appropriate school as soon as possible.

Beginner’s Day will be held on April 7 at every school in the county and parents should attend the one located in their district.

At Beginner’s Day, parents will be asked to make an appointment for their child to have an individual school orientation session during April. Parents should bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, immunization record and social security card to the program.

Parents are also asked to provide the following information to the school: name of child, child’s birthday, child’s social security number, address, parent or guardian’s name, parent or guardian’s phone number and name of person to contact if there are changes in address or phone number.

If a child between the ages of 3 and 5 with disabilities is not in school or receiving special assistance, contact Betty Covington at 783-0829 for information on the preschool child fund.
