Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls win on road

Greensboro — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls basketball team won their first conference game against Greensboro Home Educators on the road Tuesday night.

The final score was 51-44. Their overall record is 11-1 and 1-0 in the conference.

Runnin’ Patriots head coach Todd Hill said the team led by as much as ten points during most of the game. Though the team won, Hill said that he was not completely satisfied with the team’s performance.

Hill said the girls experienced foul trouble early in the second quarter of the game and was left with three starters sitting on the bench.

Despite the foul trouble, the Runnin’ Patriots led by a score of 27-19 at halftime and at the end of the third quarter had again extended their lead to ten points at 40-30.

Though the score looked mostly good for the Patriots throughout the game their performance was not one of their best. Hill said the team committed 27 turnovers against Greensboro.

In regard to the why’s of the Patriot’s foul trouble and turnovers on Tuesday, Hill said, “It was just a bad day.”

He said his immediate goal for the team during the next few weeks will be “to play a more aggressive defense without fouling” and “to place a real premium on taking care of the ball this season.”

The Runnin’ Patriots leading rebounders were: Kaylee Paris 14, Jessica Boyd 11, Joye Harrison 10.

The Runnin’ Patriots leading scorers were: Joye Harrison 16, Sydney Bedsaul 13, Ashley Marshall 7, Kaylee Paris 7.

The team will play in Greensboro tonight against Durham Home Educators in a non-conference game.
