PILOT MOUNTAIN —The number-one seeded Surry Storm Volleyball Club won the Bronze Carolina Region Tournament in Hendersonville last weekend and they played five different teams to do it.

Head Coach Jan Marion-Kiser said, “It was a great day for us all around. Every girl on this team made a contribution to the success of our team today. The girls continue to improve and have such great chemistry on and off the floor. The day was a success and I am so proud of each of these young ladies, they all played great.”

The West tournament began with eight teams total with each pool having four teams.

Surry Storm won a bracket and the number-one seeded XVP team won the other. The teams then met in the championship match and the Storm took the title and the bronze medal award.

The Storm girls opened the tournament by playing Cave 16 and beat them by two sets, 25-15 and 25-4. Next, they defeated Carolina Peak 16 Green by winning the first two sets, 25-21, 25-9.

They lost their first set of the day against Carolina Peak 16 Black by a score of 22-25. Then, they triumphed by coming back and winning sets two and three, 25-5, 15-11.

The Storm team then advanced to play the number-two seed Alexander Aces 16. They pulled out the victory scoring 25-17, 25-13 and advanced to the championship match.

The Storm won the final match 25-23, 25-9. They have won four out of the last five tournaments.

The next Surry Storm tournament is the Shamrock and is scheduled to be held in Roanoke, Va., on March 9 and 10.

On the Friday night before tournament play, the girls will have a showcase event at the Roanoke Civic Center and meet college coaches, said Marion-Kiser.

Marion-Kiser said, “This team has pushed it and worked hard.” The coach said the Storm has gone in an up direction since beginning the season.

“We have shown that we can win,” she said.

The Surry Storm volleyball team has only seven players.

“We don’t have subs everybody plays and contributes,” said Marion-Kiser.
