Mount Airy police have reported no clues so far regarding a case in which a suspicious package labeled with the word “Kaboom” was left in an overnight deposit box at a local bank.

The discovery Thursday of the large paper item, folded into a shape roughly resembling a handgun, prompted an evacuation of Bank of America on Independence Boulevard until investigators could determine if it posed any danger.

Police said the item was found in the deposit box when employees arrived at the bank on Thursday.

After responding, officers began evacuating the building while also attempting to review surveillance video of the premises before tampering with the suspicious package. However, Debra Lusky, the bank’s manager, informed police that no camera had been positioned on the overnight deposit box.

A thorough investigation of the package by Lt. J.A. Freeman, a city detective, led to a determination that it posed no threat and he took the item outside and secured it for evidence.

“It was just a piece of cardboard,” said Lt. Richard Lowe, who added that the item appeared to be a “mashed” box.

Bank employees later were allowed to return to their work stations.

As of Friday afternoon, no further leads had been developed in the incident and police said the case will be classified as inactive until more information surfaces.

“We don’t really have a whole lot to go on,” Lowe said. Investigators think the item could have been placed in the deposit box as a prank.

No one answered the phone at the bank Friday when attempts were made to obtain comment from officials there.
