Hundreds of people turned out to Jomeokee Park Saturday for a Constitution Day Tea Party Rally. The event featured speakers who encouraged the group to “take America back for Americans.”

Saying it’s time to give America back to true Americans, hundreds of area residents converged on Jomeokee Park Saturday for a Constitution Day Tea Party Rally.

The rally was held from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and featured a variety of booths set up for political candidates, right-leaning organizations and even a tactical firearms display.

But the real draw were the speakers, including Jan Morgan of Texas, Navy SEAL Ben Smith, Colonel Bill Cowan, N.C. Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby, Scott Cumbie, Bill Flynn and Ben Franklin.

The rally was an event that, as speaker Dr. Tim Johnson said, was held to spark interest in the country’s political process and engage voters.

“When we win the hearts of the people, we’ll win back this country,” Johnson said to cheers from the crowd, who were clustered in chairs in the shade of trees.

Johnson said many citizens in this country are far too unaware.

“We all know that you can’t love what you don’t know,” he said. “And too many Americans don’t know about the history of this country and its founding principles.”

Adhering to the Tea Party platform, Johnson touted limited government, hearkening back to the infancy of the country.

“Our Founding Fathers understood the struggle between individual liberties and governmental power,” he said. “The Constitution wasn’t written to govern people, it was written to protect the people from the government.”

And those in attendance weren’t just local residents.

William Temple, of Brunswick, Ga., was decked out in Revolutionary era costume for the event, braving the afternoon sun in a woollen coat and Revolutionary War-era rucksack.

Temple, who led the 2009 Tea Party March on Washington, said it is important that the average citizen becomes involved in the political process, noting that the grass-roots effort of the party is having an effect.

“If you notice who’s winning the elections, it’s the Tea Party candidate,” he said. “We’re slowly taking back the Senate and putting Tea Party candidates in those seats.”

But he acknowledged that the attendance at the events isn’t what it used to be, in spite of the large crowd at Saturday’s rally.

Instead, he said, the crowds are focused more on local and state issues.

“You won’t see the thousands of people coming out because so many of us are focused on state and local elections,” he said.

Saturday’s event was supported by Americans For Prosperity, and King resident and coordinator for the group Kyle Hall said that without taking back America for Americans, the country will decline.

“The American Dream is dying,” he said. “When the American Dream is at stake, our children and grandchildren will not have the chances we had.

“We have to realize how truly exceptional America is and we don’t need to hide that fact.”

It used to be and should be that what you see and read in the media you should not be able to tell if they are left or right leaning... That is sure not the case anymore and it is so sad.

Just look at the terrorist attack in Egypt and how our government lied to us and how mainstream media has avoided reporting on it.

pkent It could be that this paper and all papers in the area and all tv stations did not report on this rally and some were contacted.

Strange there was 3 stories this week about naacp meeting this week...

Good point HD72M. I don't know about other papers, but it is intersting to see some of the choices the NEWS makes sometimes in what they cover or don't. KKK and NAACP get coverage when they organize events, yet the Tea Party gets none. Wonder what that is all about, since the NEWS typically editorializes all over the board, although typically right of center, depending on who writes the piece. Then it could be that the Tea Party's message is pretty clearly defined as True America and President Obama is responsible for everything that is wrong with the country. Maybe it understood what the message of any Tea Party meeting will be and thus not newsworthy. Clearly I don't have the answer.

Keith Strange interviewed a man from Georgia, William Temple and a man from Tennessee, Tim Johnson although they are great patriots, they do not reflect totally on the inner workings of the tea party movement. Nobody in the tea party movement means "take back America for true Americans". That may be what Keith Strange wants folks to think we say, so it plays into the leftist narrative of false racism. What the statement The founders have awakened and they "want their country back" means Back to a constitutional and founding documents form of government that was limited in it's power and reach, unlike the Hussein Obama (It is his name before you call me a hater) administration that is into every area of our lives with outrageous taxing and regulation that is unchecked. The executive branch under pres obama and the judicial branch are both way out of line with balance of power. We want to take back our country to a republic that created the most prosperous country on earth before liberals took over!

Would be interesting for the kshinalulx4 to comment on why Tea Party rallies are not drawing as many people? From this article I get that their message is: taxes are too high, there's too much regulation, Hussain Obama took the country away from true Americans, the American Dream is dying, America was doing really well before the liberals took over, and Tea Party candidates are willing the elctions. Wonder if there is any connection between the size of the crowds and the current Tea Party message?

Have you been to the airport lately and got sexually assulited or microwaved?

Look at all the regulations you got to go threw to be a hairdresser or to have a lemonade stand.

Every word said on the phone or typed on the computer is taped and saved.

You are tracked so many different ways.

The gov can kill a US citizen, blew one up with a drone, said he was a terrorist. I think he was too but arrest him first and prove it,

The gov can pick you up and hold you as long as they want no call,no lawyer just because they say you MIGHT be a threat!

In response to the question of what a "true" American is, I offer the following: It is somebody who associates only with people who share their exact opinion on all things and looks exactly like they do, believes that their rights have been taken away, is really cynical about all politicians except the ones they support, believes all government programs should be eliminated (except the ones they are enrolled in or will need in the future) believes the flag should be made into clothing and worn, and implicitly trusts that the God referenced in the Bible was created in their own image. Now, that is a True American.
