DOBSON — Kasie Tolbert shot an even-par 36 at Beaver Creek Golf Course Wednesday to lead North Surry to a tie of first place.
The Lady Greyhounds shot a 126 to tie with South Stokes in the weekly Northwest Conference golf match. The Lady Sauras have been first each week except when the Hounds took first outright at Cross Creek two weeks ago.
Fellow Hound Gatlin Hiatt was fifth with a 43, while Sarah Holleman was tied for seventh at 47.
The Sauras had four girls in the top eight. Brooke Kiger was second at 38, Megan Mabe tied for third at 42, Brooke Martin was sixth at 46, and Jordan Myrick tied Holleman at seventh with a 47.
East Surry’s Madison Moore, celebrating her 15th birthday, shot a 42 to tie for third. The Lady Cardinals were 19 strokes behind the leaders, however, with a 145.
East’s Lindsay Chamblain shot 50 to finish ninth. After South Stokes’ Nicole Rogers shot 51, East’s Whitney Cox was 11th with a 53.
All the rain lately has kept players from getting in practice time, and that seemed to affect some players more than others, said East Coach Chad Freeman.
No one can complain, however, as the players were all in the same boat. They played the same course with the same lack of practice.
Beaver Creek is a little shorter, so that helped offset some of the rust a little, Freeman said.
Mount Airy finished in fourth place with a 174. Surry Central only had two players available this week and was unable to field a team score.
Central Coach Daniel Broughton said he has four freshmen on the team, and two of those girls were busy with drivers’ ed training.
He said Autumn Senter shot 55 a week after shooting 52 at Pilot Knob. Those low scores have clinched her a spot in the regional tournament as a freshman.
Star Burton shot 62 after a 59 last week at Pilot Knob.
“She’s a straight-up beginner,” said Broughton, but is coming along nicely for someone who had never played until a few weeks ago.
For the Greyhounds, Coach Daniel Johnson said, “Obviously I’m pleased.”
Kasie was the top performer again this week, and Gatlin and Sarah came in with two of their better scores, he said.
Those three seniors aren’t just the top seeds, they have taken on the leadership mantle, the coach said.
Some players just like to goof off or listen to music on the team bus, said Johnson, but Kasie and Gatlin have taken turns leading devotionals before getting out at the golf course.
And while most people were rained out of practice Tuesday, Kasie went out after the showers and squeezed in some practice time, he added.
The last regular season meet is Wednesday at Cross Creek Country Club. Then the Northwest Conference meet is the following Monday at Pilot Knob Park.
