The Mount Airy Public Library is inviting patrons and members of the community to attend several free events held during the week of Valentine’s Day, including Speed Book Sharing, a Valentine’s craft class for kids, and a romance novel book sale.

A Speed Book Sharing activity is scheduled for Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of the library. This is a chance to find new books and maybe even strike up a new friendship or acquaintance. The book sharing activity is a chance for everyone to add new books to their reading list, recommended by someone who truly loves the book.

Everyone who attends will begin the activity paired with someone and each pair will have 3 minutes to introduce their books. Ideally, this will be 1.5 minutes for each person. At the end of 3 minutes, the timer will go off and they will switch partners.

Attendees are asked to bring along a favorite book of any genre, along with an idea of a 1.5 minute explanation about why they love the book. This may be a book from a favorite series, a good novel, an influential book, or even a childhood favorite. In fact, all ages are encouraged to participate — even a parent, child, and their favorite storybook.

Angela Llewellyn, of the Mount Airy Public Library, hopes to see people of all ages at this event, especially young adults and teenagers. “Young people will love it. Here at the library, we have a lot of elementary age kids and adults right out of college, but we’d love to get more young adults and teenagers.”

The library hopes to continue the Speed Book Sharing activity, perhaps holding it once per month or every quarter, but that will depend on the turnout at Monday’s event.

Wednesday brings a Valentine’s craft class for elementary school age children. The class will begin at 4 p.m. and students will work on a chocolate kiss flower.

A book sale takes place Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., featuring romance novels of all types. This event is sponsored by The Friends of the Mount Airy Public Library and all proceeds will benefit the library.

After a large book sale in November and more donations received since then, the library staff realized it had an overabundance of books from the romance genre. The idea for the special romance book sale came to life and Valentine’s Day week was a perfect pairing, according to Llewellyn.

This book sale has a bonus: for every novel purchased, the buyer will receive free chocolate.

The library will still have the yearly book sales, held each April and November.
