Although the race for the regular season title and top seed in the girls 2A/1A Northwest Conference is over, Bishop McGuinness made a little noise as the season winds down Friday night, handing North Surry its first conference loss 35-29.

The Greyhounds held a 6-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and still held the lead in a low-scoring first half, 10-8, as both teams went to the locker room.

The momentum shifted after the half when the Villains hit the post hard in the third quarter and scored 17 points to take a 25-17 advantage. In the fourth, the Greyhounds mustered 12 points and scored one more basket than the Villains, but it was too little, too late, and Bishop McGuinness claimed victory.

Greyhound’s Head Coach Shane Slate said, “It was another close game between Bishop, most of our games have been within four to eight points over the last four years.”

North Surry won their previous contest, on Jan. 9, by a 37-33 score.

Slate said the Greyhounds did pretty well on defense but had a tough time getting the shots to fall. Slate said, “We did not make the shots after they set up a zone whether in jump shots or opportunities on the side.”

The Greyhounds have played three games in five days and they have been down to the wire, Slate said. The Hounds won against Surry Central on Monday and Winston-Salem Prep on Tuesday.

In the fourth, the Greyhounds mustered 12 points and scored one more basket than the Villains. It was too little, too late, and Bishop McGuinness claimed victory.

Malaya Johnson was the game high scorer and led the Greyhounds with 13 points. Kristina Rumplasch scored seven. Both Jordan Badgett and Erin March had four points. Maddison Hawks scored one.

Cameron Nieters scored the highest amount for the Villains and had 11 points.

The Greyhound’s conference mark fell to 14-1 and 20-2 overall. Bishop McGuinness is second in the conference at 11-3, with an overall record of 14-7 according to maxpreps.com. With just one conference game left for North Surry and two for Bishop, the Villains cannot catch the Greyhounds.

The last regular season game for the Greyhounds is scheduled on Tuesday against East Surry.
