The Lady Greyhounds fell 9-0 Thursday night against the second-place ranked Bishop McGuinness Villains.
Coach Julie Gammons said she was proud of how well the Greyhounds fought against an aggressive hitting and baseline pounding Villain team.
The two number one seeded players battled it out in an extremely competitive match. Kendall Cortes of the Villains battled against Greyhound Sarah Glasco in an intense skirmish. Bishop McGuiness Coach Catherine Lassiter described her number one ranked player, Cortes, as a player who gets to the ball and judges where it is going quickly. Glasco fought back with power-hitting style, adept footwork and extreme mental toughness, but fell with a match total of 6-3, 4-6, 8-10.
Other single match-ups were Harriette Blackburn against Morgan Auger (2-6, 3-6), Chainey Kuykendall against Adaire Hudson (2-6, 1-6), Lakin East against Anna Owen (2-6, 0-6), Jazzman Pugh against Megan McDowell (0-6, 1-6) and Chantel Davis against Anna Petrangeli (1-6, 1-6).
The Villains further swept in doubles 8-5, 8-0, and 8-3.
The night was a loss in tennis for the Greyhounds, but it was a huge win for the girls celebrating Senior Night. Seniors on the team are Chainey Kuykendall, Lakin East, Jazzmyn Pugh, Chantel Davis, Katie Chandler, Summer Sechrist and Emily Calhoun.
Coach Julie Gammons and the rest of the team presented these seniors with a touching memorial that moved the seniors some said to tears. The memorial consisted of handmade hair ribbons, signed banners, a rose, a memorial tennis ball and hand-decorated T-shirts for each player.
Senior Chantel Davis commented that she was deeply moved by such thoughtfulness but also commented that she was unhappy with her performance against Petrangeli whom she described as consistent and ambitious.
