PILOT MOUNTAIN — A Westfield man remained in critical condition in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center yesterday following a single-vehicle crash on Jessup Grove Church Road.

At 10:24 p.m. Wednesday, authorities were called to a home near the crash site, where a badly injured man was found in the yard of a home. When rescuers arrived, they realized they were dealing with a crash victim.

Steven Atkins, 24, of Pell Road, was taken to the hospital via AirCare. The helicopter landed at the Neighbor’s on Key Street in Pilot Mountain, according to Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton.

Shelton said Atkins crashed in a field and walked to a nearby house before he collapsed.

“The call was received as an unresponsive patient,” Shelton said. “We didn’t know there was a wreck until we got to the scene.”

Shelton said Atkins remained in the Intensive Care Unit Thursday.

Trooper Brent Jones of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said that Atkins was going too fast for the curve near Jessup Grove Church, ran off the road, then the car flipped onto its top. He said he doesn’t know if Atkins was ejected or climbed out of the 1998 Dodge Neon.

Atkins has been charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving, Jones said.
