A woman apparently suffering some sort of seizure allegedly ran a red light on U.S. 52 near Worth Street Tuesday afternoon, causing a four-car crash that sent six people to the hospital.
Four of those sent for medical treatment included the driver, her husband and her two children, all in the van.
Mount Airy Police Officer George Daughenbaugh said the van driver, whose name he did not release, was on the way to Northern Hospital for help at the time of the 3:10 p.m. wreck.
Daughenbaugh said the van was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lane, which had a green light at the time of the crash.
The driver of the van and her 4-month-old daughter were transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Another daughter and the father were taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County, as were the drivers of two of the other vehicles. Daughenbaugh did not release the names of anyone involved in the crash.
Traffic going northbound ground to a crawl when police narrowed the road to one lane at the scene, Officer Kelly Hiatt said, because a utility pole guide wire was damaged and traffic lights had dropped too low for tractor-trailers to pass safely underneath.
Daughenbaugh said N.C. Department of Transportation officials arrived at the scene and were able to restore the traffic lights. All lanes were opened around 6 p.m.
The officer said the wreck is still under investigation.
