MOUNT AIRY — Mr. George Dwayne Simmons, 75, of Mount Airy, widower of Mrs. Shirley Jane York King Simmons, passed way Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Central Continuing Care. He was born April 5, 1937, in Surry County to the late John Pyrse and Nancy Zella Gammons Simmons. He graduated from Westfield High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. He was retired from McLean Trucking Company after working 20 years of service and was a member of the Teamsters Association. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Simmons was known for his laughter, contagious smile and quick wit that will be cherished by his friends and family. He had a great love for family and enjoyed life. Surviving are two stepdaughters, Denise Peebles of Yadkinville and Sara Vaden of Winston-Salem; two stepgrandchildren, Adam Brent Vaden of Winston-Salem and Laurn Denise Peebles of Yadkinville; a sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Clayton Johnson of Pilot Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Arvid and Joyce Simmons of Mount Airy; a niece, Nadine Shelton of King; and nephew, Bradley Johnson of Mount Airy. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by a stepgranddaughter, Hannah Sara Vaden; and a stepson-in-law, Larry Peebles. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Keith Love and the Rev. Alton Bledsoe. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens with military honors by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home.
