This Mount Airy Fire Department Fire Engine and Command vehicle take up positions in front of the Thai Cafe Monday afternoon. Two more fire engines and a ladder truck responded to a fire call at 12:44 p.m. Assistant Chief Chris Fallaw said members of the restaurant staff smelled electrical wiring burning and saw smoke from an area of the wall and called for assistance. Fallaw said a grill had been set too close to the wall and burned a small area of the wall. No injuries were reported in connection with the fire and the restaurant was expected to be re-open by Monday night.

Thai Cafe customer Laura Dickens gets her to-go order from General Manager Amanda Misay. Monday afternoon lunch customers were evacuated from the building after staffers saw smoke coming out of the wall in the kitchen. No major damage was reported from the electrical fire. Three Mount Airy Fire Department engines, a command vehicle and a ladder truck responded to the call as well as Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry County EMS on standby while the source of the smoke was located.

Firefighter Cody Pruitt takes off some turnout gear after a preliminary investigation at the Thai Cafe on Monday. Assistant Fire Chief Chris Fallaw said a stainless steel grill set too close to the wall burned a small area of the wall. In addition to the roof, firefighters accessed a shared wall between the restaurant and the Peaceful Dragon Dojang while determining the cause of the fire.
