DOBSON — The Shelton Foundation Scholarship continued its mission of offering local students an opportunity to continue their education with a dozen students names as recipients for 2013.

A dozen 2013 Foundation Scholars were honored at a reception at the Hampton Inn and Suites of Dobson on Wednesday afternoon. Ed and Charles Shelton welcomed the twelve scholars and their parents, along with principals and other representatives from the Elkin, Mount Airy, Stokes County, and Surry County schools, and Surry Community College.

Students were congratulated for their hard work and accomplishments thus far. Ed Shelton stated, “Education is very important. You have to be able to do a lot of different tasks and be flexible. You need to study hard and learn as much as you can. Remember to always do the right thing.”

Charles Shelton said that the students were being recognized because of their parents’ support by always making sure they did their homework and studied. Charles Shelton told the students, “Always be prepared. If you don’t first succeed, study harder.”

The 2013 Shelton Foundation Scholars are Elkin High School’s Megan Hampton and Jonathan Young, Mount Airy High School seniors Jacqueline Cortes and Emilia Domnaru, North Surry High School students Tessa Burch and Kelli Ramsey, South Stokes High School senior Jacob Stultz and Surry Central High School students John Belcher, Eddy Cabrera, Megan Gillespie, Brooklyn Tucker, and Joanna Wall. Recipients were chosen by the Shelton Foundation Scholarship Committee. They will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used for tuition at Surry Community College, Forsyth Technical College, or Wilkes Community College.

The Shelton Foundation Scholarship Program has established a program to provide scholarships for graduates of secondary schools in Stokes County or Surry County to enable them to attend Surry Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, or Wilkes Community College and potentially go on and pursue an undergraduate academic degree or certificate from a two-year or four-year North Carolina college or university.

The Shelton Foundation includes members of the families of Charlie and Ed Shelton, Buddy Norwood and Cindy McBride. According to Surry County Schools Educational Foundation Liaison Melissa White the Shelton Foundation Scholarship program is intended as a catalyst for educational opportunity. The grants were converted to a character scholarship program in 2007. Grants are in the amount of $1,000 a year for each recipient and also go to returning, eligible students from classes beginning in 2010.

Is gay Boy Scout issue germane to the Real World?
Never mind the argument over whether openly gay youths should or should not be allowed to join the Boy Scouts. The fact that they have been permitted to do so, through a vote Thursday by the 1,400 members of Boy Scouts of America, is just another sign of the times. But the bigger issue, in m...
