DOBSON — Dobson officials are reeling after hearing of the death of long-time commissioner and town advocate Lana Brendle.
Brendle died Saturday at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following what Town Manager Josh Smith called a “several year battle with cancer.”
Her first foray into political life was in 1995, when she was elected Dobson town commissioner, a position she held until her death.
Brendle served as a contract agent with the North Carolina License Plate Agency in Dobson.
She was a graduate of Elkin High School and Kings College, and had taken classes at Surry Community College.
Brendle is survived by children Neil Brendle and his fiance’ Carrie Harrison, and Jayme Berrier; three grandchildren; parents Henry and Bonnie Hayes Wood; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Wood and Terry and Becky Wood.
Smith said Brendle’s term on the town Board of Commissioners isn’t set to expire until 2016, a vacancy members of the board will have to fill.
“Under state law, the board of commissioners will fill the vacancy with an appointment,” he said.
The town manager called Brendle a “supremely dedicated public servant.”
“She was the longest-tenured member of the board and had served multiple terms,” he said, noting Brendle dedicated every waking moment to bettering the town she loved.
“She was in a unique position, working at the license plate agency, and had an opportunity every day to interact with the people she served,” he said. “She was such a good communicator and used those skills to serve the citizens she worked for.
“Because she was such a great asset to our community, her passing is going to be a big loss for the town.”
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at the Dobson First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship center on Tuesday, from 6 - 8 p.m.
