Writing contest for seniors carries $1,500 prize
Ridgecrest, a retirement community located in Mount Airy, is sponsoring a writing competition for high school seniors with $1,500 in prizes. The Silver Pen Scholarship is open to high-school seniors with plans to graduate this year. The winning recipient will receive a certificate and $1,500 to go toward college expenses. Local man killed in farm accident
Rescue officials were on the scene of a farm accident Saturday afternoon, one they say claimed the life of a 71-year-0ld county man. According to John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, the man was working on a farm tractor at the time of the accident. “He was working on the tractor when he started it and it rolled over on top of him, pinning him under the tractor,” Shelton said.
