Cases involving bare breasts deserve close look
I often am reminded of the fable about a man who cried because he had no shoes, but upon seeing someone without feet realized just how lucky he was in comparison. This can be true of one’s chosen occupation as well. Sometimes when I think journalism is a really hard profession and how could I have been such a numb-skull to get involved with it in the first place, I look around and see where others have it much, much worse. One of the firs...

Caution urged on changing city elections
With street-safety issues expected to dominate Thursday night’s Mount Airy Board of Commissioners meeting, the caution light also was out regarding a proposed change in city election procedure. It might not have been a case of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” but there was concern about the wholesale scrapping of an existing primary system for municipal elections — among both citizens and board members. Those concerns emerged as part of ...

Code change could limit shelter rescues
DOBSON — A proposed ordinance change for the county’s animal shelter would make it “next to impossible” for an out-of-state animal rescue group to secure animals from the shelter for adoption, according to state officials. The ordinance change has been tentatively placed on the Board of Commissioners agenda for March 4, just days before shelter officials and animal advocates have scheduled a sit-down to work out their differences. A meeti...

North Surry High School’s annual Destination FFA Cattle Sale is an almost perfect backdrop of solutions and issues facing farming — coming at a time when many farmers are aging out of the profession and interest in local produce and livestock is on the rise. On one level the sale is a crucial fundraiser for the program at the school. It is scheduled for March 9 at noon at the Mount Airy Stockyards. The registered and commercial cattle sal...
