Sheriff seeks jail upgrade, additional staff

Mount Airy native Anna Wood’s series “Reckless” was picked up as a mid-season series by CBS network. Memorial Day to alter sanitation pickups
Monday’s observance of Memorial Day will bring changes in Mount Airy’s sanitation schedule. This will include no yard waste collection that day. The next such pickups are to occur on June 3. Also, the Monday industrial roll-off route will be serviced on Tuesday instead. However, Monday’s commercial garbage routes will operate under the regular schedule. City offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Vietnam combat vet to speak at Memorial Day event

Area pools open for summer season
School’s out for the summer, and area pools are ready to enjoy a longer summer season than in previous years. DOBSON — A long-time community leader and former mayor in the Town of Dobson has died. Jimmie Harold Davis, 77, died at his home Wednesday. Three charged in burglaries
A Mount Airy man is behind bars following a series of thefts and break-ins. Deputies from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jonathan Lee Holyfield, 31, of 201 Boaz Lane, Mount Airy, along with two other Surry County residents on Tuesday. An Ohio couple were transported to a Winston-Salem hospital Thursday after their motorcycle blew a tire while they traveled east on Interstate 74. Area has seen no shortage of rainfall
April is supposed to be the time for showers, yet that has been the case for just about every month so far this year in Mount Airy. Recent rainfall, including a drenching of the area this week, has produced 3.95 inches so far during May, according to personnel at F.G.
