Ground broken for Laurel Hill pavilion

ARARAT, Va. — Laurel Hill, the birthplace of Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, is getting a new feature, an activity pavilion that will host lectures, receptions and other special events.The J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust Inc. held a groundbreaking for the facility this week at the site, located in Ararat just across the state line from N.C. 104.In 1992, the trust group bought the Laurel Hill property to preserve and interpret the birthplace of the Confederate cavalry general. Over the years, its development has included the placement of interpretive signs illustrating locations of interest from the Stuart family’s years at Laurel Hill as well as Gen. Stuart’s wartime exploits.
