CARY — Members of the Surry County Starfish recently competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The two-day meet featured over 300 athletes from counties around North Carolina.

“All of our athletes had an outstanding meet,” stated Starfish coach Cathy Cloukey. “It was an exciting event and they proudly represented Surry County.”

Individually for Surry, Chance Casstevens took silver in the 200 yard freestyle and finished sixth in the 100 yard freestyle. Fallon Cook took home a silver medal in the 25 yard freestyle and gold medal in the 15 yard unassisted swim. Katie Gibson earned gold medals in the 25 yard freestyle, 25 yard backstroke, and 15 yard unassisted swim. Jacob Groff captured silver medals in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events along with the 50 yard breaststroke.

Haley Johnson took home a gold medal in the 25 yard freestyle and 15 yard unassisted swim while also earning silver in the 25yard backstroke. Neil Joyner added to the Starfish medal total with a gold medal in the 25 yard backstroke along with a silver in the 25 yard freestyle. Joyner also finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle. Jill Kelley took home a silver medal in the 25 yard freestyle along with bronze medals in the 25 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle.

Surry’s John Marion contributed to the Starfish medal tally by earning gold in the 25 yard freestyle while teammate Hiatt Nester captured gold in the 50 yard freestyle along with a fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Dylan O’Neil earned gold in the 50 yard freestyle, silver in the 25 yard backstroke, and bronze in the 25 yard freestyle. Travis Powell also had a solid meet finishing fourth overall in both the 25 yard and 50 yard freestyle events.

In addition to the outstanding individual performances, the Starfish had a strong showing in the 200 yard freestyle relay with the team of Chance Casstevens, Jacob Groff, Neal Joyner, and Hiatt Nester taking a gold medal.

“Our team members really performed well and had a tremendous meet,” added Cloukey.

Surry is coached by Cloukey, Rob Sinton, and Benny Brannock. Avery Tucker, Hadly Tucker, Lindley Williams, Matheson Williams, Hunter York, and Anna Banas serve as Unified Partners.
