The Dobson Dolphins and Elkin Wet Lightning swimming teams squared off last week at the Elkin Municipal Park, with the hosts claiming a 971.5-513.5 victory.
The Wet Lightning started off strong, as several of its swimmers beat their times from Elkin’s first meet of the season. In event five, 11-year-old Lily Gambill blew away her competition as she won the girls 11 and 12 year old 100 SC meter individual medley with a finals time of 1:38.97. The next fastest time for the girls 11 and 12 year old 100 SC meter individual medley was 1:52.68 by the Wet Lightning’s Chandler Ann Beals. In the girls 15-18 year old 50 SC meter freestyle, Elkin’s 17-year-old Annie Douglas beat teammate Brooke Collins by .86 second. The boys 15-18 year old 50 SC meter freestyle saw the Wet Lightning’s 16-year-old Dockery Sloop win in a time of 26.81.
Although the Wet Lightning came away with the win, the Dolphins had several winners in their respective meets. Sara Collina won the girls 13-14 100 SC meter individual medley with a time of 1:24.53. Sebastian Frausto won the boys 6-and-under 25 SC meter freestyle with a time of 29.30, which was 1.19 seconds faster than his seed time.
The teams are scheduled to meet again on Monday in Dobson. The Dolphins will also host the conference championships at the end of the month, with the 11-and-over finale taking place on July 29 and the the 10-and-under championship the next day.
