Storm wrap up season at AAU Nationals

The sixth-grade Surry Storm basketball team recently wrapped up their 2016 season with a trip to the AAU National Tournament at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., where the team placed fourth overall in the National AAU Classic bracket.

The Storm, who qualified by finishing fourth at the North Carolina AAU Championships back in May, played seven games in Clarksville between July 14 and 18. They posted a 3-4 record, but two of the four setbacks came in games that were not decided until ther final possession of the contest. Surry competed against the Indiana Lady Impact, Kentucky Legacy Elite, Cincinnati Angels, Tri-Valley Thunder (from Rome, NY), All-In (Chicago), Northeast Rockers (Philadelphia), and WPA Bruins (Pittsburgh).

The tournament that included the Storm consisted of 36 teams that were divided into two brackets. Tournaments in other divisions were being contested at the same time, and during the week, Surry swapped pins with 61 teams from all over the country. They took part in opening ceremonies at the APSU football stadium, known as Governors Stadium, The ceremony included entertainment from skydivers attached to large American flags and messages from keynote speakers David Midlick, the APSU women’s head basketball coach, and Mayor of Clarksville Kim McMillan.

The played involved made lifetime memories and got to see best rising seventh-graders in the nation. After one of the games, families took in the sites of nearby Nashville, including the Grand Old Opry, the Gaylord Opryland Resort, and Opry Mills.

Players on the team included Kylie Bruner, Kylie Hollingsworth, Morgan Mayfield, Mia McMillen, Hailey Patel, Colleen Patten, Adison Phipps, Skylar Southard and Sofia Stafford. They were coached by Sara McMillen and Chad Phipps.

The Storm family extends a big thank you all who helped the team financially during the past year.
