DOBSON — With about half of the season into the books, Surry Community College’s volleyball team is challenging for the top spot in the Region X standings.
After splitting a doubleheader with Wake Tech and Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday in Raleigh, the team hold an overall record of 9-4, but is 8-1 in regional play. Their only loss of the season in Region X came on Aug. 27, when they lost in straight sets to Cape Fear during a quad-meet held in Hickory. Surry and Cape Fear both have one loss in region play and trail Catawba Valley, which is 9-0 in the region. Surry’s next match will be at Catawba Valley on Thursday evening.
In Saturday’s league match with Wake Tech, the Lady Knights had to go to extra points to win the first set, but then cruised to a 27-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory to complete a season sweep of Wake. Surry committed no hitting errors in an excellent third set to put their hosts away.
Ashley Johnson led the team with 13 kills and 15 digs. Anika Thomas added eight, and then former East Surry teammates Cheyenne Kota and Sydney Marion each tallied seven. Another ex-Lady Cardinal, Jessi Marion, had three kills, three aces and eight digs.
For the season, Johnson, a 5’10” freshman out of Starmount, leads the team with 78 kills and is second on the team with 111 digs. Thomas is second with 77 kills, but first with 140 digs. Marion is second on the team in both categories, with 68 kills and 65 digs. Kota leads the team with 25 service aces to go with her 47 kills and 35 digs.
