DANBURY — The battle for second place in the Northwest 1A Conference, and local bragging rights, won’t be settled until next week.
The Mount Airy soccer team took care of business on Friday night with a 1-0 victory at North Stokes, securing third place in the NW1A and a state playoff berth, but the Lady Bears still have a shot at tying rival East Surry for second in their final conference match next week.
Mount Airy (10-8-2, 6-3 NW1A) needed to earn the road win over the Lady Vikings (6-15-1, 4-5) to assure themselves of the No. 3 spot in the league. North Stokes made them earn it, as the game was deadlocked deep into the second half, with hard-nosed defense by the Lady Bears and keeper Ailia Halpern keeping the hosts off the board.
Late in the match, Mount Airy finally broke the scoreless tie when freshman Baylee Greenwood found sophomore teammate Kora Ledezma open near the goal and made the cross, which Ledezma finished off for the winning goal. The Lady Bears held on the rest of the way.
The team will host East Surry for senior night on Tuesday night. The Lady Cardinals (9-9-1, 7-2) beat Mount Airy 3-0 on April 15, and the Lady Bears will have to reverse the verdict of that game to have a shot at the No. 2 position in the league. Mount Airy then wraps up its regular season at Elkin one night later.
