CARY — Thanks to an impressive run in the 2-A state playoffs, Sommer Chilton and Mallory Wilmoth’s seasons will go on next week, when Surry Central takes on Big south 2-A/3-A Conference champion Lake Norman Charter on Monday afternoon in the elite eight of the dual-team bracket.
However, the Lady Eagles’ top doubles team had another assignment on Friday afternoon. Chilton and Wilmoth qualified for the individual state championship tournament, which will be held over two days at the Cary Tennis Center.
Their opponents in the opening round, Kate Whichard and Ellie Rinehart of Edenton Holmes had entered the event as the East Regional champions and one of the favorites to win the championship, but Chilton and Wilmoth, the fourth seeds out of the Midwest Region, gave them all they wanted in a match that went to three sets and one extra game before finally falling 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5.
The duo and the rest of the Surry Central team will return to action on Monday at 4 p.m. in Huntersville, looking for a trip to the regional finals in the dual-team tournament.
