Local tennis teams got a first look at some outside competition Thursday at the preseason Mount Airy 1A Women’s Invitational. The Granite Bears, East Surry, Elkin and North Stokes competed in event.
It was the second year Lady Bears coach Rodney Pell hosted this tournament exclusive to 1A teams, and for the second straight season Mount Airy’s Elizabeth Marion earned the singles championship.
Marion didn’t drop a set and finished things off with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Elkin’s Mattie Timmerman. Marion recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over North Stoke’s Brittney Brown in the semi finals, and a 6-2, 6-2 victory against East Surry’s Sarah Mann in the opening round.
Mount Airy’s Logan King dropped her first match of the day to the eventual runner-up, but King bounced back to rattle off two wins and earn the consolation bracket championship. She defeated Elkin’s Brianna Dryer 6-1, 7-5 in the consolation final.
East Surry shined in the doubles tournament with the Haley Jennelle and Abigail Martin duo winning the title. Jenelle and Martin defeated Maya Hicks and Lisa Omuro from Mount Airy in the final with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The champions from East Surry knocked off another Mount Airy team, Elizabeth Bray and Meredith Martin, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 in the semi final match.
Mount Airy’s Hicks and Omuro reached the final after a tough 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over East Surry’s Haley Gilley and Carson Payne.
Over in the doubles consolation tournament, North Stokes’ Alyssa Collins and Morgan Rogers earned first place with 6-3, 6-1 win over Elkin’s Emma Aldridge and Larkyn Nelson.
Mount Airy kicks off its 2016 regular season on Monday with a home match against East Wilkes. The Lady Bears also host Elkin and travel to North Surry during the opening week.
East Surry also gets things started on Monday as the Cardinals travel to face county-rival Surry Central.
