ELKIN — There’s a good chance that the Mount Airy girls’ tennis team will be celebrating a state tennis championship soon, but it won’t be in the individual tournament.
The Lady Bears’ lone representative in the Mideast Regional held this past weekend at Elkin Municipal Park was singles player Elizabeth Marion, who came up one victory short of qualifying for this weekend’s state finals when she fell to conference rival Diana Alexandrov of Atkins in the regional quarterfinals.
Marion defeated Morgan Paris of Avery County 6-2, 6-1 in her first match, but then lost 6-4, 6-1 to Alexandrov in the next round, allowing the Atkins star to advance to state along with three other players. In that match, Marion was very competitive in the first set. She lost serve to open the match and fell behind 1-4 out of the gate, but rallied to 3-4 and 4-5, earning two breaks along the way but also dropping another one to Alexandrov.
In the doubles tournament, the only local team left was East Surry’s No. 1 team of Haley Jennelle and Abigail Martin. They also missed a trip to the finals by one match. In their opener, they defeated Ollianne Raney and Madison Johnson of Avery County 6-2, 6-1, but then lost 6-3, 6-2 to Brittney Brown and Abigail Williams of conference rival North Stokes.
