The best high school track and field athletes from across the state will converge upon North Carolina A&T State University this weekend for the NCHSAA state championships, and there will be no shortage of local representatives in attendance.
Schools from the 1A and 3A classifications will compete on Friday, with the 2A and 4A schools hitting the track on Saturday. Below is a look at all of the athletes from Surry County who will look to take home a state championship medal this weekend.
Mount Airy (1A)
The Bears have by far the most athletes qualified for this weekend’s festivities. The Mount Airy girls were runners-up at the 1A Midwest Regional on May 13, while the boys finished third. Both teams could earn a state championship with solid performances in Greensboro on Friday.
Madeline Mayfield will represent the Lady Bears in the high jump, the 400 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Shalin Revels will join Mayfield in the 400. Jo Snow and Hanne Cooke are slated to compete in the 1600 meter run, and Cooke will also test her legs in the 800 meter run. Jessica Bevard qualified for the state’s 300 meter hurdles event, and Bevard will team up with Cooke, Snow and Shelbey Taylor in the 4×800 meter relay. Rounding out the Lady Bears who will travel to NC A&T is Eliyah Harvey-Brown, who qualified for the shot put event.
On the boys’ side, Mount Airy is led Cordell France, who will run in the 100 and 200 meter dashes on Friday. Grayson Corbin qualified for the 400 meter run, and Donovan Greene is scheduled to compete in the high-jump event. France, Corbin, Greene and Malik Frost will team-up in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays on Friday as well. Gabriel King and Malcolm Malone both are set to throw in the state championship discus and shot put events.
East Surry (1A)
