GREENVILLE — East Surry’s 9-10 baseball team continues to impress, winning all three games in pool play at the super regional Tournament of State Champions here.
The baseball team won games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to take the top seed in the tournament that continues today.
The North Carolina state champions beat the South Carolina team on Saturday, then topped Virginia on Sunday.
On Monday, East Surry beat the Georgia champs 12-4.
Murphey-Candler, of Brookhaven, Georgia, actually led 5-4 at the midway point, said Jeff Edmonds, whose son Brady is in the tournament. Then East Surry roared back with five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Folger Boaz had four hits including a first-inning, two-run homer to lead North Carolina.
Luke Bowman, Anthony Ayers, Jordan Davis and Will Jones each had a pair of hits. Luke Brown and Gabriel Harpe rounded out the North Carolina attack with a hit for each. Daniel Creech picked up the pitching win for North Carolina.
East’s 3-0 mark makes it the top team going into the single-elimination portion of the tournament.
East Surry will take take on fourth seed Martinsburg (2-1), West Virginia, in Tuesday’s first semifinal at 10 a.m.
Virginia will play Florida in the other semifinal at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday’s winners will play for the Tournament of State Champions title on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
