MAMS soccer coach offering camps, travel teams

Staff Report

Mount Airy Middle School head coach Tom Paschal is offering two summer soccer camps and is also taking registration for the 2016-17 session of the Paschal Soccer Academy and the PSA’s first-ever travel teams.

Local soccer coach Tom Paschal and his Paschal Soccer Academy are planning to form travel teams this summer for the upcoming 2017 spring travel season.

Paschal, the boys’ and girls’ head soccer coach at Mount Airy Middle School, has also run an instructional academy for the past several years, but the academy has never fielded its own teams. The teams will begin practice in August and training will continue through May 2017. The teams will practice once a week, adding a second practice in February for team development. Each age group will participate in two or three tournaments during the spring of 2017. Tournament fees will be divided among players who are participating in the tournament.

In addition, the PSA is also accepting applications from players who wish to sign up for academy training, even if they’re not interested in participating in travel ball. Academy Training will be held once a week from August through May, weather permitting. You do not have to be a part of the Academy teams to participate in academy training. Fees for the academy are based on age: 8-9 ($200), 10-11 ($225), 12-13 ($250), 14-up ($300). A training shirt is included for Academy members. For members of the travel teams, an additional $90 fee is required for two jerseys, shorts and two socks.

All Academy members, whether on the travel team or not, are part of a development program geared toward developing an individual player’s skills with the ball. PSA works on a player’s touch through juggling, passing, receiving and shooting.

The deadline is also approaching for the annual Mount Airy Middle School and Paschal Soccer Academy summer camps. The MAMS camp will be held July 12-14 and is for boys and girls between the ages of eight and 14. The deadline for signing up is July 6, and the cost is $50 per child. The camp focuses on the same areas of skill development as the PSA training. All proceeds from this camp go to Mount Airy Middle School for equipment and supplies for the school’s soccer teams.

The PSA’s own soccer camp is scheduled for Aug. 3-5. It is also open to all children ages 8-14 and costs $50 to attend. The deadline to sign up for this camp is Aug. 1.

Registration forms for both camps are downloadable at the PSA’s website, located at www.paschalsoccer.org. You may also contact Coach Paschal directly at (601) 795-3375 or email him at [email protected]

Paschal is a native of Mount Airy and a graduate of Mount Airy High School. In addition to coaching soccer at MAMS and operating the PSA, he is the head coach of the Northern Triad Soccer Club U15 Select squad and Head Instructor for the Reeves Community Center Jr. Soccer Academy. He holds a USSF “E” license and has 16 years of experience as a soccer coach in both North Carolina and Mississippi.
