WILKESBORO — The East Surry volleyball team continues to dominate its opposition in the early stages of the 2016 season.
After a sweep against Ashe County to kick off the year on Monday, the Lady Cardinals (2-0) flew past Wilkes Central on Tuesday with another 3-0 victory.
East Surry won the first set 25-16, and that was as close as the Eagles would get to pulling out a win. The Cardinals rolled in the final two sets with victories at 25-14 and 25-9.
Nearly the entire East Surry roster made an impact on Tuesday. Leading the offensive attack were middle hitter Kendall Beck and do-it-all setter Bethany Clayton. The two Lady Cardinals tied for a team-high eight kills, while Beck led East Surry with five blocks and Clayton recorded 26 assists, six digs, three aces and three blocks.
Sarah Marion recorded seven kills and Alyssa Jessup had six to follow Beck and Clayton.
Other notable performances from East Surry came from Cameron Sloop and Morgan Smith. Sloop produced an all-around performance with four kills, five aces two blocks and eight digs. Smith led the back line from her libero position with 12 digs and also supplied three assists.
Things get much more difficult for the Lady Cardinals over their next two games. East Surry will play its home-opener on Thursday against the defending 1A state champion, Alleghany. Then the Cardinals will look forward to a Surry County grudge match against North Surry on Aug. 23.
