Mount Airy was set to face Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday in the second round of 1-A dual team play, but rain pushed the meet back two days.
With six singles matches and three doubles matches, Mount Airy needed five wins to move on. The girls swept singles play 6-0 to clinch the team win. Because of time constraints, the doubles teams did not play.
The team headed for Cary because two singles players and a doubles team qualified for the state tournament that begins today. Coach Scott Kniskern said he had to have the team at the courts by 8:30 a.m. so they spent the night in a hotel room, accompanied by some of the parents.
The winners of the first match this morning will play again later in the day. With three matches going on, Kniskern expects to have at least one winner in the group. The team is expecting to stay in the hotel again tonight so the players can take in the finals on Saturday — and hopefully cheer on a teammate or two.
